Incense Equipment
:: Brass Bowl Censer (small)
Brass Bowl Censer (small)
Finely cast in brass with light bronze finish. Size: 2 inches deep - 4 inches in diameter. Brass Censer with Ash. Unlike Indian incense (joss) sticks which have a thin bamboo spine - Japanese - Chinese and Tibetan incense sticks are extruded - hand or machine rolled or cut - and are wholly composed of incense. They cannot therefore be burnt in an incense holder intended for Indian incense as the end of the stick will block the aperture (assuming it can be inserted in the first place). This incense can be burnt in a special holder with a larger aperture - placed on a tray or saucer - but the traditional way - used in temples in Tibet - Nepal - China and Japan - is to burn the sticks in an open- topped censer which has been filled with ash. After a few weeks of use the ash may be loosened - and cleared of incense butts and other detritus - by passing the ash through a tea or food strainer/sieve. Our ash is produced from tree and shrub trimmings and waste wood - but ideally it should be the ash of burnt incense. Traditionally this was used in Zen temples in Japan and - as incense was only burnt when the Monks were practising meditation - the ash was treated with great respect as each ounce represented hours of meditation ~ in Zen Buddhism the actualization of the Buddha Nature. Gradually your ash will be permeated with true incense ash and the qualities of meditation which it represents. Rice (a food and held sacred in many cultures) or sand should not be used in the censer - nor should spent matchsticks be left in the ash.
